MP3 | Robinson The Great City CDep / (2006) / Debello Recordings SOLD OUT In truth, you will be hard pushed in discovering a more polarizing album that The Great City, but the violent, uncompromising manner in which the instruments and vocals conduct themselves really is something any follower of extreme music will embrace with a passion. Brutal. Heavy. Absolutely magnificent. |
More Info:
Debello Recordings has scored gold yet again, and as if holding some of
the brightest newest names in modern, extreme grindcore such as the
ambiguously named, tongue-in-cheek 25 Dollar Massacre was not enough,
Debello has also had one of the best extreme music releases marketed and
released by them.
The Great City is ten untitled tracks of pure, outrageous noise, and
being a huge admirer of crazy, unconventional acts such as Robinson; I
for one cannot get enough of this album.
The omission of any track names and the simple numbering of 1-10 for each
song almost acts as a metaphor for how concise and direct Robinson’s
sound is. Robinson really don’t mess about here, with the majority of
songs sprinting to and fro uncontrollably fast, and clocking in at less
than a minute, rendering the listener breathless and incredulous to how
on earth the album could progress and get anymore intense. The experience
of hearing Robinson for the first time is akin to being slapped either
side of the face at break neck speed, as you are plummeted into a world
of raw brutality.
A prefect illustration of this is with the intro. Frantic, ridiculously
adroit blastbeats are carried out here over a collection of uncomfortably
dark sounding chords for barely even half a minute. The effort then
commences with a crashing of cymbals as the dust settles. Another
impressive aspect of the sticks work is displayed with Robinson’s insane
time changes, at times the drumming takes a brisk 180 spin and completely
surprises and turns the song in question on its head. The Great City is
seriously some of the most unpredictable music I have ever come across.
Vocalist Mike is a vital, paramount tool to the uneasy listen that Ohio
natives Robinson fashion. His vocal style at times is absolutely bizarre;
rasping yelps are evident through The Great City, at times so
concentrated it might make one postulate that he has just been released
from a lunatic asylum.
The guitars on this release are crunching and deathly low tuned, once
again adding to Robinson’s insanely heavy sound. The production is quite
a limp point however, the drums and cymbals outweigh the guitars almost
to the point where you can barely even decipher what the guitars are
doing. Surprisingly enough, this barely blemishes what is a good album
and distinguishes Robinson’s music away from other bands of the style.
